5 Herbs That You Should Be Making Medicines Of For Home Based Treatments

Home Based TreatmentsSince ancient times, human beings have sought the refuge of medicinal plants and herbs to treat their illnesses. Even a few hundred years ago when allopathic medicines and treatments were not that rampant, people used  extracts from plants and herbs to produce medicines that helped them recover from common ailments like cough and cold to more serious ones like jaundice and malaria. Still now, ayurvedic treatment is one of the most sought after medicinal alternative to allopathic and many people place their trust on it, mainly because natural remedies don’t have side effects and are pretty inexpensive as well.

While herbal medicines are readily available online or in markets, you can make your job easier by growing the herbs at home- on your windowsill, balcony, porch, backyard or even the roof. This way you can enjoy their benefits whenever you need them and you don’t even have to spend money to buy them.

3. Chamomile- Chamomile flower is known around the world for its usefulness in herbal teas but it has many other benefits too. This perennial plant requires occasional watering and needs to be placed close to the sun.

Medicinal properties- Rich in minerals, copper, zinc, iron, salicylic acid and Vitamins C and B1.
Benefits- When added to tea, chamomile facilitates sleep, relaxes the mind and muscles and reduces stress. It is an anti-inflammatory that can be used on the skin to cure rashes and infections.

4. Lemon balm- This herb has a distinct minty citrus smell and can grow at an alarming rate, so the stems need to be trimmed regularly.

Medicinal properties- It is a natural antioxidant rich in flavonoids, rosmarinic and phenolic compounds.
Benefits- When rubbed against the skin, the leaves heal insect bites, rashes, sores and herpes. The juice is beneficial for headaches, insomnia, fever, colds and depression.

5. Basil- This medicinal herb is used frequently in cooking. It cannot withstand cold so do not keep it outside in cold temperatures. Also, it requires regular watering and plenty of sun.

However before planting any herb, make sure the weather conditions are favourable otherwise the plant will not thrive like you want it to.

Ayurvedic Herbal Medicine And Chinese Herbal Medicine – Know The Relation Between Them

Ayurvedic Herbal MedicineOf late, ayurvedic & herbal products have gained immense popularity. You will be glad to note that these ayurvedic as well as herbal products have gained immense popularity in the world. Ayurveda is one of the ancient traditions of treatment in India and can be translated into English as "science of life". However, this is an extremely poor representation of the term!

The term ayurveda actually tells us as to which substances, actions and qualities are life enhancing and which are not. Thus, you will be glad to note that Ayurveda is actually an instruction for enhancing your way of life. You will also be glad to note that ayurvedic medicines also have relevance to Chinese traditional medicine. You will find that both the systems are instructional and their main aim is to enhance the quality of life. Most importantly, both of these ways of treatment are mainly focused at the treatment of specific diseases through ways that effectively cured diseases in the ancient times.

The most commonly-used ayurvedic & herbal products in the most reputed medical systems of India and China, are somewhat overlapping. In both these medicinal systems, the herbs are described as per the symptoms that they are capable to treat. Apart from this, the descriptions are given as per their warming or cooling nature. Moreover, you will also find information about the influences of these drugs on the body humours. The main differences between ayurvedic herbal medicine and Chinese herbal medicine is about the categories of disharmony – especially the diagnostic as well as therapeutic groupings.

Here, it should be noted that in case of Chinese traditional medicine, major importance is given to yin and yang and the five elements along with the depictions of certain bodily humors like qi, blood, moisture as well as essence along with the internal organ systems (zangfu). In case of ayurvedic medicines, the overall system is quite complex. You will mainly find the dominance of three dosha or tridosha - kapha, pitta, vata. All these functions within the body is described mainly depending upon the stages of transformation rather than any functional organs or physical structures.

But again, one should also remember that depending upon these influences on health as well as diseases, many a times, forces Ayurvedic medicines to become quite a simplistic system. On the other hand, Chinese medicine kept itself away from the philosophical binds by mainly working on the existing form. Ayurvedic & herbal products and medicines did not have same kind of transformation and thus at times it suffers from certain inconsistencies that actually dates back to a much earlier age.

In today's world, various herbal formulas have been developed today relying on different combinations of modern as well as traditional indications for various uses of ayurvedic & herbal products. This has made both ayurvedic medicines as well as Chinese herbal medicines a better treatment option for many patients. A lot of diseases are well cured with ayurvedic medicines as well as Chinese herbal medicines. Ample researches are going on in order to find cure for terminal diseases by using the medicinal properties of these herbs and plants.

It should also be noted here that whether it is the Chinese herbs or the ayurvedic plants, the chances of side effects of these medicines are quite less or so as to say nil. If proper promotional activities are taken into consideration, then these medicines will help in curing a large number of diseases.

Ayurveda- A natural bliss

Ayurveda can be defined as a system, which uses the inherent principles of nature, to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual's body, mind and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature.

The trend, Ayurveda is so in vogue off late that one might get confused how old this particular practice is. The truth is, Ayurveda is a 5000 year old system, dates back to the vedic culture. The aim of this system is to prevent illness, heal the sick and preserve life. Which means:
Ayurveda
  • Ayurveda protects health and prolongs life.
  • Ayurveda eliminates diseases and dysfunctions of the body.
Ayurveda is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements: air, fire, water, earth and ether. These elements are represented in humans by three "doshas", or energies: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Theory of Bio-energies or Tridoshas:

The three doshas, or bio-energies found in our body are:
  • Vata pertains to air and other elements. This energy is generally seen as the force, which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and elimination.
  • Kapha pertains to water and earth elements. Kapha is responsible for growth and protection. The mucousal lining of the stomach, and the cerebral-spinal fluid that protects the brain and spinal column are examples of kapha.
  • Pitta pertains to fire and water elements. This dosha governs metabolism, e.g., the transformation of foods into nutrients. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems.
Ayurvedic Products:

The herbs commonly used in the manufacture of Ayurvedic medicine are highly nutritive with lot of healing properties. Today, Ayurveda and its herbal treatment flourishes side by side with Homeopathic, Unani Tibb and Western conventional medicine and is actively encouraged as an inexpensive alternative to drugs.

When compared to other synthetic drugs, ayurvedic herbal medicines do not cause any side effects. It works effectively fighting against various infections and diseases and thereby gaining quick recovery.

Clinical studies have shown that ginger relieves morning sickness, sage can relieve a sore throat, and hibiscus tea gently lowers blood pressure.

Benefits of Ayurvedic Products:

It is a type of cancer which effects throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), tonsils and the base of the tongue or oesophagus (food pipe). Here it should be noted that alterations in squamous cells can lead to abnormal growth in the throat. When these cells start to multiply at an intense rate, tumour will develop which will block the wind pipe and can make swallowing difficult.

Possible reasons for throat cancer

Some of the major reasons for which throat cancer plagues are as follows:

Major symptoms that can help you detect throat cancer

It should be noted here that like any other type of cancer, throat cancer too develops in different stages. If you miss out on the first signs of throat cancer, it can lead to severe complications in the future. Unless you know the symptoms, you will not be able to detect, prevent or cure this ailment at the right time.
  • Enlarged lymph glands in the neck
  • Persistent sore throat that does not improve in 1-2 weeks.
  • Pain and difficulty in swallowing
  • Ear or neck pain
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Change in voice
  • Hoarse voice that occurs in the advanced stage of tumor as it attacks the voice box causing roughness as well as difficulty in breathing.

  • Patches in the mouth- white, red or dark patches that do not go away
  • Painful ulcers
  • Lump in the lip, mouth or gums
  • Bleeding from the mouth
If you suffer from any of the above mentioned symptoms, visiting an Oncologist will be of great help. Some of the major tests involved in throat cancer screening are as follows:

Needle biopsy: This technique helps to detect superficial lumps or masses. A specially designed needle is used here in order to collect a tissue sample of the tumor. This sample is then sent to a laboratory to determine the tumour malignancy.

Endoscopy: In this process a flexible tube with a light attached at one end is used to look into the throat and nose.

Panendoscopy: This is actually triple endoscopy which combines laryngoscopy, esophagoscopy, and bronchoscopy to diagnose the throat cancer.

Chest X-ray: This helps in detection of throat cancer and other likely metastasis (spread of cancer from one to other body parts) is done by this process.

MRI, PET and CT scan: These are common imaging tests which helps in the diagnosis of throat cancer. The patient is advised for MRI, CT scan and PET of the head and neck and CT scan of chest.

Correct diagnosis at the right time will help you cure the disease with cancer medicines itself.

A natural scrub can be made using nuts like cashew, almond and pistachio along with rosewater, wheat germ oil, chickpea flour, red lentil and the cream of the boiled milk. Ayurvedic medicines and the emerging trends in this field

Modern medicines have developed to a great extent in the recent times because of the development in science and technology.

Ayurvedic Medicines
In the present times, efforts are being made in order to update the science of Ayurveda. In a recent trend, special attention is being given toward the pharmacological and therapeutic potential of ayurveda. There are many scientists who are working toward herbal research which will help in development of new principles which will help to cure various medical disorders. But again, the basic principles of Ayurveda like the concept of Agni (digestive fire), Tridosha (three bio-humors), Dhatu (tissues), Mala (excretory products) as well as disorders (vyadhi) are not taken care by them. While developing a new drug, these factors are not given much importance yet. The most important motivation behind any kind of ayurvedic drug invention is the modern views as well as references. In order to do so, it is quite essential to require the reassessment of the whole thing in a holistic way.

Some of the upcoming trends in ayurvedic medicines are as follows:

Ayurveda, on the other hand, is considered to be a 5000 year old science. Those who are associated with the world of Ayurveda and Ayurvedic products are extremely proud of themselves! Here, it is important to note that it will be good if the tradition and culture change as per the present trends. But there has been not much change in the form of Ayurveda that is being practiced since ages. It is obviously true that the principles of Ayurveda are immortal but it is also important to modify them as per contemporary needs and scientific trends. This will not only benefit the society but will also nurture and develop the science of Ayurveda.
When you search for ayurvedic medicines, you will find them in two major categories – Traditional and Branded. Of late, there are mainly 1,500 traditional products available in the market. On the other hand, more than 30,000 branded products are available in the market in the present times.

A lot of people are searching for ayurvedic medicine information in the recent times. So, the Indian manufacturers export products worth around Rs.1500 crore amongst the Rs 6,000 crore products manufactured per year.

In the recent times, India exports around 60% of crude herbs, 30% finished products and 10% partially prepared products to the outside world.

Presently, ayurvedic medicines are used in various fields – food supplements, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals as well as industries engaged in extracting or distilling oils.

It can be well understood from the facts mentioned above that Ayurveda has now found ample importance in various other parts of the world. However, it should also be noted here that to integrate modern technologies with the age old basic principles of Ayurveda can be very tough. In order to achieve this, a senior rheumatologist of USA, Dr. Gopal Basishta is planning to rewrite Charak Samhita  by inserting certain modern technologies. If such innovative plans are not seriously considered by the experts, then ayurveda will become stagnant and will be taken over by the present herbalist research. Some of the major pharmaceutical brands like Himalaya, Dabur, Zandu, Baidyanath, Arya Vaidya Shala etc. are conducting research in various aspects of ayurveda and help it evolve with time.
