Cancer is spreading in the world like an epidemic. Amongst the different forms of Cancer, Prostate Cancer is the second most common form of Cancer in men and affects the prostate gland which is an important part of male reproductive system. In a recent study, it has been found that Afro-American men have the highest chances of developing Prostate Cancer. Apart from this, men with a family history of this type of Cancer are more prone to it. The risk of Cancer increases with age. So, older men, especially those who are above 50 years of age, are more prone to it. However, various cancer medicines have come up which helps to arrest the spreading of cancer.

Defining Prostate Cancer

Prostrate Cancer primarily affects the prostate gland of the male reproductive system. Because of this, the cells in the body or that particular gland change and grow out of control. As a result, it leads to a lump or tumor. In case there is a cancerous tumor in the prostate of a man, then he may not know it immediately. It will develop slowly and spread to other parts of the body.

Major causes of Prostate Cancer

The exact cause of Prostate Cancer is unknown. But again, there are certain risk factors which are linked to prostate cancer. Ageing is one of the major reasons which leads to higher risk of prostate cancer. Family history is another major reason which leads to this form of cancer. If this form of cancer runs in your family (if your father or brother is affected with this), then chances of prostate cancer is 2-3 times higher in you than other people. The diet that you intake can also increase the risk of prostate cancer. Those men who consume large amounts of animal fat like red meat can be prone to cancer.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

In the early stages of prostate cancer, you will not be able to notice any kind of symptoms. Even if you notice the symptoms, it may vary depending upon the location of the lump. Changes in prostate can cause problems with urination and ejaculation. However, similar symptoms can be noticed in case of non cancerous condition like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). You should also consult a doctor immediately if you face pain in the back, hips or pelvis or in urinating. The doctor will conduct various tests and if he finds something, he or she will ask for a biopsy. It is always better to take a second opinion.

Treating Prostate Cancer

Cancer medicines have developed to a great extent. If the cancer is detected at an early stage, then more treatment options are available. Surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy are commonly used to treat the disease. Those who are aged more than 70 years, they are recommended "watchful waiting". If you are young and in good health, then the doctor might recommend that the cancer be treated. However, cancer medicines and treatments can have side effects.

A healthy lifestyle will help you stay away from prostate cancer. So, beware..be safe!
